Giveaway & Guest Post ~ The Kure Jaye Frances

The Lair is happy to announce a new author that has come over to play....

Ms Jaye Frances!!!

Thank you, Cecile, for hosting me on All I Want and More today. I really appreciate the opportunity to talk about The Kure, and to let your readers know about my “Resolve To Read” promotion on Amazon through the month of January.

***You are quite welcome Ms. Jaye... Have fun!=)***

What do you do with two people who unexpectedly find themselves falling for each other, despite an onslaught of supernatural obstacles?

John Tyler, one of the main characters in The Kure, is stricken with a ravaging plague that is destroying his body. When he discovers the existence of a demonic book of healing called the Kure, he learns that it contains a forbidden ritual that might help him. The problem? It requires the complicity of a young virgin on the day of her eighteenth birthday. John’s search for such a woman leads him to Sarah Sheridan, and although he originally seeks her out to determine if she will help him unlock the spell’s power, after meeting her, he knows he could never ask her to make such a sacrifice.

When an angered Sarah confronts John about his true intentions, he tries to explain that he had long ago changed his mind about asking her to participate in the wicked rite. And as an unexpected romance begins to blossom, they find themselves contriving a plan to use the ancient ceremony in a different way, hoping it will rid John of the devastating disease.

In the following excerpt, John is distraught when their attempt to invoke the power of the Kure has failed. John and Sarah share a tender but bittersweet moment in which Sarah reveals her feelings for him, and John is filled with regret and disappointment when he realizes he will never be able to enjoy the physical pleasures Sarah could bring him.

Here’s an excerpt:

Sarah reached out from under the blanket, her fingers tenderly finding their way between his. Fearing the agony he would have to endure, she tried to hide her anxiety, but she couldn’t mask the betraying quiver in her voice. “I’ll ride out to your house early. We’ll take your wagon and go into town from there.”

John didn’t argue. If she wanted to be with him, regardless of the outcome, he would not let his pride keep her away. He nodded slowly, and then much as a devout worshipper gazes upward seeking divine strength, he lifted his eyes to hers.

But Sarah’s attention was elsewhere, stolen by a growing arc of white light slowly forming over her bare feet. Following the gleaming ray to its source, she was staring up at the large ocular window, where a bright silver-blue moon was edging its way across the lens. “There’s our moon,” she said with a long sigh. “I was so sure we could make it work.”

John took another drink. As he lowered the bottle, he let his eyes wander to Sarah’s long, shapely legs. Stretching beyond the edge of the blanket, they were tan and sculpted with muscle. Even in the pale amber lamplight, he could see tiny, nearly transparent blonde hairs glistening against the brown sugar sheen of her thighs. It was a desire he could only grieve for. Disappointment filled his heart as he realized he might never feel them, light and soft against the side of his cheek.

The disease has already taken my manhood. Even now it keeps me from knowing the pleasure she could bring me.

He raised the whiskey to his mouth, no longer noticing the raw aftertaste. Setting the bottle down, he twisted it into the straw, careful not to release it until it touched solid ground. For a moment, John wondered if Sheridan would miss it. But an empty bottle of bourbon could be replaced. His daughter’s virtue could not.

What if the old man suddenly burst through the door? What would he think? What would he do if he found us like this, both of us naked, with only a thin cover between us?

It was a fleeting thought, and John washed it from his mind as he tilted back the bottle.
He felt Sarah tapping him on the arm. “Move over a little,” she said. “You’re sitting on the edge of my blanket.”

John leaned to the side, freeing the fabric. As he righted himself, he swayed awkwardly, surprised that the liquor was already distorting his balance and slowing his actions.

Raking a few handfuls of hay into a makeshift pillow, Sarah scooted down and turned on her side, shifting and squirming until she was comfortable, unconcerned that her movements revealed a portion of her bottom.

Aching to follow her, John began inching himself lower, reluctantly testing the alcohol-induced daze that was keeping the pain manageable. He wanted to pull her close, strip away the layer of wool between them and satisfy his hunger for the warmth of her skin. Instead, he carefully curved his body away, keeping several inches of space between his infected flesh and her half-exposed backside. It was as close as he dared come.

Bringing the bottle to his lips, he quickly emptied it and closed his eyes, letting his head sink into the straw.

Here’s a brief synopsis:

John Tyler, a young man in his early twenties, discovers he has contracted a ghastly affliction affecting a most sensitive part of his body. When the village doctor offers the conventional, and potentially disfiguring, treatment as the only cure, John tenaciously convinces the doctor to reveal an alternative remedy—a forbidden ritual contained within an ancient manuscript called the Kure.

Although initially rejecting the vile and unholy rite, John realizes, too late, that the ritual is more than a faded promise scrawled on a page of crumbling paper. And as cure quickly becomes curse, the unholy text unleashes a dark power that drives him to consider the unthinkable—a depraved and wicked act requiring the corruption of an innocent soul.

Ultimately, John must choose between his desperate need to arrest the plague that is destroying his body, and the virtue of the woman he loves, knowing the wrong decision could cost him his life.

For a limited time, read “The Kure” for only $.99 (kindle version)

I always spend the last few days of December reviewing my writing plan for the coming year—to determine what’s going to receive priority and how I will budget my time to make sure I get it done. During one of those planning sessions, I noticed my husband was also putting a few goals together for the new year. When I asked him to tell me about his “resolutions,” he said that one of them was to read more, especially books that fall outside his favorite genres, “just to see what else is out there.” We began to talk about how many more people are now reading books of all kinds, primarily due to increased availability and choice of low-cost eBooks for the kindle and nook. I’m constantly reading comments from readers who decided to try a particular author’s work because it was ninety-nine cents, or in some cases, free. Then my husband asked an interesting question: “Why don’t you offer some kind of promotion to encourage more people to read The Kure, with the idea that they’ll be more inclined to read the book if you temporarily lower the price?” I really had to think about this one, but after realizing it might motivate a few more folks who are not familiar with The Kure to take a look, I decided to do it. I’m calling it “Resolve To Read”, and it’s going on right now. Effective for the month of January, the kindle version of The Kure can be purchased for ninety-nine cents on Amazon. So if you were planning on buying a kindle version anyway, why not take advantage of the “Resolve To Read” promotion and save two bucks?

I’d like to conclude by sharing a few details about myself. I was born in the Midwest and grew up surrounded by traditional values and conservative attitudes (which I quickly discarded). I’ll readily admit that my life’s destination has been the result of an open mind and a curiosity about all things irreverent, and I invite visitors to my website with a friendly caveat: “Be forewarned, my life has not followed the traditional path of homemaker, wife, and mother.” When I’m not consumed by my writing, I enjoy cooking, traveling to all places tropical and “beachy” and taking pictures—lots of pictures—many of which wind up on my website. I live on the central gulf coast of Florida, sharing my home with one husband, six computers, four cameras, and several hundred pairs of shoes.Link

  5. This is a unique storyline for me and reminds me of some of the stuff the Victorian era 'Hellfire Clubs' got up to and believed. Sounds like a good read.

    1. Hi, Tore,
Thank you for the great question. The storyline for “The Kure” was inspired by my long-time fascination with the paranormal, including anomalies of the supernatural and the occult. And I knew my main characters had to be flesh and blood, without the benefit of unnatural abilities or skills. With that in mind, I began to explore the question of what supernatural conflict or circumstances might try to prevent two people who are drawn together from realizing their true passion.
Hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
