Gettin the low down on Ms. Beth Kery & **Update** Giveaway!!!!

Get a cup of your favorite drink, pull up a chair and get comfy ~ because today we are going to give a warm welcome to a wonderful lady I have had the pleasure of getting to know...
Please welcome Ms. Beth Kery to the Hussy Lair!

Welcome Ms. Beth! I want to thank you so much Ms. Kery for coming over to my place!! Kick back, relax and enjoy yourself!

BK: I will, thank you for the hospitality, Ms. Cecile.

If I picked up a book called Ms. Beth Kery - All You Want to Know... What would the blurb be??

Geek by day, creator of shamelessly sexy romance by night…

Is writing your full time job? If so, what do you do to unwind?

I think I have officially moved over into full time writing work, yes. Unwind for me equals hot baths, a good glass of red wine, chatting with my husband about the ins and outs of the day, and…er…watching ghost hunter shows. They are my shameful secret.

If you have a job outside of the home, how do you balance it all?

I’m not sure I do it very well. Every day is a challenge. I write at home, so sometimes it’s hard to stop…to ‘clock out’, you know? I really need to work harder about doing that and spending more fun time with my husband.

Which of your books is your favorite and why?
I know asking that question is like asking who is your favorite child is ~ if that is the case, please tell us about a particular moment in one that touched your heart? ((Yes, I know I am evil!))

I change my answer to this question, but at the moment, my answer is DARING TIME. I just recently re-watched the Denzel Washington Déjà vu and it reminded me of why I think time travels can be so wildly romantic. I think DARING TIME is probably the best representation of me as a writer and person. I did so much hands-on-research for it. Plus, it’s a combination of erotic romance, a historical, a contemporary, a crime drama and a paranormal. I loved, loved being able to put all those favorite elements into one book.

What has been one lesson that you have learned in your writing career that will always stay with you?

When I first signed with my agent, Laura Bradford, and she sold Wicked Burn to Berkley in about two and a half weeks, she called me and said, “It usually doesn’t happen this easily, so enjoy it while it lasts.” I soon learned that writing is a bizarre road of euphoric highs and terrible lows. You have to cling onto those highs to sustain you through the rough spots. You can’t just move through the ‘high’ looking for the next one, but instead, gather the good news around you like a cloak and hang on tight to the experience. The winds of change and time will try to blow it away, so you’ve got to really grip on to those moments.

What one piece of advice would hand down to someone pursuing a writing career?

I’ve said this several times, so I hope readers don’t get sick of hearing it, but my simple advice is this: WRITE. Sit down at that computer and put in a daily word count. Set a goal, and meet it. Put down your word count in a daily log to keep track. If you have trouble sticking to it, hook up with a writer friend and report to each other for accountability. With all the sideshows that go on in publishing, it’s sometimes easy to forget the most important thing is product. Don’t let doubts arise about your readiness to start a project. Just do it. It will be the best experience/training you can give yourself. No one can convince me that writing a piece of work was a complete waste of time. Value is inherent in the experience of creating a book, novella, etc. , whether it sells or not.

What has been your most memorable moment with your writing career?

Good question. Hmmm. I used to say when I signed with super-agent Laura Bradford, and was still coasting on the high from that, when she called me just 2.5 weeks later and told me Wicked Burn had sold to Berkley Sensation. It was almost too much for me to stand. I think my brain de-circuited.

However, I might have a new most memorable moment. The week of Feburary 1, 2010, I was happily celebrating the debut of RELEASE with my awesome yahoo group, Total Exposure. During the ‘party’ my agent called and unexpectedly told me I’d been invited to do a Berkley anthology with Megan Hart, Lauren Dane and Emma Holly. I was floored. At the end of the conversation, Laura said…now I’m not sure if I should tell you or not, because it might increase your disappointment if we don’t get the offer, but you know that proposal we sent to Silhouette Special Edition? The editor called at the end of last week and was asking a bunch of pre-deal type questions.

My heart stopped. I’ve hoped and prayed to get in with SSE for a while now.

Well, I had to muddle through wondering until Friday, when Laura called to say I got the deal with Silhouette for a series called Harbor Town, U.S.A. So I released a book, got an anthology deal and a series deal all in one week. It’s a toss up between that experience and the signing with Laura and then selling a couple weeks later. The latter will stay with me forever, because it was my first agent/first deal.

If one sentence could sum up your life up to day, what would that sentence be?

She got really, really scared at times…but she always tried anyway.

Okay... nice and easy time is over... Hee hee...
Do you drool over covers as much as we do??

If anything, I might drool more. I do love a beautiful cover and I get so jealous of some of the amazing ones I’ve seen.

Do you blush when you read a really steamy love scene?

Nope. I might have once. I remember when I FIRST got back the edit for an erotic romance, I was mortified for about five minutes. Why? Because it’s done in a super-professional manner, but in the margins, it’ll say things like, “How about using ‘cunt’ here. You’re over-using ‘pussy’”.

Snort.

But then you get used to it. Explicit language is just language, and it’s got to be edited just like anything.

Do you read your work to your hubby... No, I am not talking about the nice, sweet, parts... I'm talking about the smutty scenes, lol =)? IF you do, what does he say or does he blush?

I don’t. We have an agreement about that.

Tell us a little bit about Beth's fantasy hero??

One thing I’ve learned in life is that men are so different from women. I know I’m stating the obvious, but I really respect that difference. A lot of times I hear that my heroes are so alpha that they’re obnoxious. I know I’m going over the top for the purpose of a romance novel, which is a fantasy, but I really do believe that men occasionally (often?) do things that women just can’t understand.

I love men. I consider myself to be very girly, and I love how different men are from me. It’s the contrast that I think is so sexy. I’d never dream of forcing a man to be like me. I like that he’s different. I respect it, just as I hope a man can respect me as a woman.

I do have a perfect romantic hero in fiction—it’s Sam Shepard’s portrayal of Chuck Yeager in the movie The Right Stuff. That movie itself sort of gets at what I’m saying about alpha males. They are obnoxious and cocky. Some of them are woman-chasers. But they also are the type of men to conquer space, just like the cowboys of old conquered the wild land of the west. They are fearless and stubborn, and they’d do anything for the woman they decide is theirs.

To me, Sam’s portrayal of Yeager is my fantasy hero because he’s gorgeous, wild and untamed, but so is his wife. They have this amazing, sexy, risk-taking relationship. She actually tells him in the movie that if he ever ‘settles’ as far as his flying, she’ll leave him. They are totally, completely devoted to each other. It’s this dynamic, intensely sexy, risk-taking relationship that I remember when I think of ‘perfect’ romance couples.

Okay quick questions...

Dark or Light: Light. I’m very visual.

Half Empty or Half Full: Depends on the day, but usually half full.

Tea or Coffee: I drink both. Coffee a.m., soothing tea p.m.

Milk or Dark Chocolate: MILK

Summer or Winter: Hmmm, my first impulse is to say summer, but I’m actually more my cozy-self in winter.

Cell Phone or Email: email

Hug or Kiss: I’m a kiss-a-holic. I think the kiss is one of the biggest highlights of sex, and often sadly downplayed in erotic romance.

Hot or Sexy Man: Hmmm…???? I’ll say Sexy, because hot implies mere good looks. Sexy can be so much more.

Cook or Clean: Cook

Sunrise or Sunset: Sunrise

His need for her was so absolute, he agreed to share her with another man in order to possess her.

Genny loved her husband Max, but something was missing—a sexual charge that was instead ignited by his business partner, Sean. He was ruggedly handsome, with a heart-stopping smile and a slow, sexy New Orleans drawl that made Genny weak. The more time they spent together, the stronger the attraction between them became and when her husband offered to share her with Sean for one intoxicating night, both Genny and Sean were too tempted to refuse.

That night in the company penthouse, Max and Sean showed Genny the heights of ecstasy. But it was Sean who scored her very spirit, and one-on-one, they were red hot. But as Genny learns, there’s a price to pay for such impulsive pleasure. What began as a night of forbidden desire spirals into a whirlpool of murder, sensual submission, secrets, and a scorching passion that threatens to consume everyone it touches.

  10. Hi Beth! Hi Cecile!

I just have to say that The Right Stuff is one of my all time favorite movies, alpha males...my favorite is Scott Glenn portrayed by Ed Harris, sexy, loving, protective, and an all out risk taker, all the men portrayed were. Sam Shepherd is a prime example. Thanks for reminding me!

Beth, is there any that speaks to your muse, makes you have to write, not just want to write?

Thanks for a great interview! I love learning more about authors!

    Dottie :)

  13. Hi, Leotine (waving) from one geek to another!

    Howdy Chris!

Elaine--LOL. Yeah, that would have been a bit more of a 'no brainer' choice.

Thank you for stopping by itsjustme!

Morning Kara and Stacy! Thanks for the kind words!

SVZ--Hello! LOL--yeah, some details must be kept under raps to keep the marriage bonds intact.

Hi Dottie! Many things speak to my muse...certain kinds of music, a newspaper article, observing a couple in the distance, a scene from a movie. Have to write...yeah...a little thing called a deadline. LOL.

Patti--well, like I said, it is a bit jarring to see it within this really professional context. But it was a good lesson. Like I said, illicit language is as viable a way of communicating as anything. And yes...it must be edited. lol.

Cecile--thank so much for having me at your blog!

I'm a HUGE Fan of your work! I loved reading Release, Come to Me Freely and Exorcising Sean's Ghost...I'm eager to read more of your releases...majority of them are on my birthday wishlist. :)

I'm eager to find out what you're going to come out next...Can we expect something similar along the lines of Release?

    Happy Reading

  17. Hi Anna!!
My answer to your question is 'yes and no.' The next book I have out is called Velvet Cataclysm, a full length novel coming out from Samhain May 18. It's different, because it's a paranormal. However, the intense emotion/romance/sex--those elements are all the same.
My next Berkley book, called Explosive, could indeed be said to be similar to RELEASE. It's a contemp erotic with suspense elements.
    Thanks for stopping by Anna!

  23. Hi Cecile and Beth! I've heard of Ms Kerry's books before but I haven't read them yet, I was wondering if I could get something from her back list? Preferably "Daring Time." or "Subtle Magic." Oh and I was wondering do any of your other Subtle novels come in print or just e-book? Can't wait to read something by you!

Oh and Leontine, believe me when I say your not the only one who likes accents both my mom and I are very fond of them too, although I'm usually more into Australian and Scottish accents. I haven't heard what New Orleans one sound like yet, I'll have to keep that in mind if I ever go traveling.

  59. Hi Ms. Kery,
I love your books and I am so excited about this contest :)

I have a quick question for you - do your characters stay with you after you have finished writing their stories? Which couple have stayed with you the most?

Do you get any inspiration for your love scenes from your husband? Do you ever get embarrassed when your relatives read your love scenes? They are so steamy, I love your stories!

    Thank you :)

  63. I've only ever heard it on tv, I don't think I'd be able to stand it if I was actually in front of a guy who talked like that.

  64. Cecile which Indiana Jones? I haven't seen the Crystal Skulls one yet and the only one I really liked was temple of doom. I really liked him in The Avengers with Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman, and he was good in League of extraordinary Gentlemen too.

  71. Oh I totally agree with you Cecile! Sean's definitely still a hottie, he's one of those few guys that ages very gracefully. Like Patrick Swayze and Michael Jackson, fortunately Sean Connery's still alive!

  73. Wonderful interview!

LOL, that's hilarious about the editing of an erotic romance! Oooh, I so agree about steamy kiss scenes being downplayed in erotic romances. Erotic romances should include more hot kisses, the sexing is more explosive with a great build up to it. :D

Just wanted to let you know, Cecile, I have an award for you on my blog~

  74. Hi there! I haven't had the pleasure of reading one of Beth Kery's books. Which of your books should a new reader of yours start with?

  75. Fi! Thanks for stopping by. I was happy but surprised to know Release knocked off Daring Time from your fave list. I didn't see that coming. lol.

Pattepoilue: Now that sounds like an interesting drink!

Cathy--howdy! I haven't seen you in such a long time! How are you?

Houston--my husband is wonderful to spend time with, it's the 'shutting down' the shop that's hard. I will certainly let you know when I get the key to things! lol.

Dottie, thanks, and I hope you enjoy Velvet Cataclysm. I loved writing it.

    Thanks, Ina!

Scorpio--I have been lucky. I feel that daily, and I'm so thankful.

Erotic Horizon-haha, well, it is a bit of a shocker seeing that in the margin in official editing.

JennJ--Yay for ghost hunting! I don't know why I think they are so fun to watch...haha.

Paranormal Heaven--given your handle, I'd suggest Daring Time? The only thing I know for sure is that when people start with Wicked Burn, then go to Daring Time, they are often sort of...dude, what's with the paranormal light? I want another contemp! When people start with DT and go to a contemp, I get a similar reaction though. lol. Thanks for stopping by!

Anna--sigh, so true about the kisses, eh? More kisses all around!

    Thanks Eva and Marissa!

  76. Anna ♥!! Thank you for coming and the award!!!!! You are too kind my friend! {{Hugs to you}}
