The Blurb:
Some lovers never leave you...
Twenty years ago she had her whole life spread out before her like a mesmerizing map. She was Bess Walsh, a fresh-scrubbed, middle-class student ready to conquer the design world. And she was taken. Absolutely and completely.
But not by Andy, her well-groomed, intellectual boyfriend who hinted more than once about a ring. No. During that hot summer as a waitress and living on the beach, she met Nick, a dark haired, local bad boy. He was, to put it mildly, not someone she could take home to Daddy.
Instead, Nick became her dirty little secret; a fervent sexual accomplice who knew how to ignite an all-consuming obsession she had no idea she carried deep within her.
Bess had always wondered what happened to Nick after that summer, after their promise to meet again. And now, back at the beach house and taking a break from responsibility, from marriage, from life, she discovers his heartbreaking fate--and why he never came back for her. Suddenly Nick's name is on her lips...his hands on her thighs...dark hair and eyes called back from the swirling gray of purgatory's depths.
Dead, alive, or something in-between, they can't stop their hunger.
She wouldn't dare.
Okay... now for my words!!!
Short Review:
Bess, soon to be a divorced mother of two teenage boys, is dealing with a lot.
Her husband, Andy, is that guy that always screws up a relationship, but gives you those eyes for another chance.
Nick, the lover of some many years ago, who is still haunting Bess's dreams.
Bess and Andy dated while Bess was in high school through college. Everyone thought they were the couple that was perfect. Well, we all know how true that is NOT! I don't care who you are, your relationship is far from perfect. But that is how it looked on the outside to everyone. Until that summer Bess met Nick.
Nick was the bad ass of those days. He was the one every girl wanted, but every mother wanted you to stay away from.
This book was rocky for me to start because each chapter goes from Now - to Then and it keeps flip flopping. I found myself just reading the Then... then coming back to the Now sometimes.
And normally I am NOT a skipper.
Bess annoyed me a little because I felt she had no strong backbone. I wanted to take her and shake her sometimes and say "Hey... WTF???? What are you doing?? Andy cheated on you. And yet you go back!!!!" But that is her downfall. She wants everyone else to be happy; and sometimes that costs her. But you will see... that these characters are weaved together in such a way, that it will take you back to those days when you had options of who to date and when the decisions you made affected the outcome of everyone.
Now on for my more thorough review!
The Main Players:
Bess is going through a divorce and trying to adjust to what her new life is going to be like. She moves out of her old house, into the beach house her parents passed down to her. She spent her summers at this house when she was in college. The memories, the lover, the heartbreak, the sea.... all comes back to her! The sea engulfs her, mind, body and soul. She is a stable person, capable of holding her own. She is a person though, that does not like to move outside of her comfort zone. And when forced to step out of that zone... what will happen?
Nick is your bad ass. He is the one your Mom warned you about. Everyone in his world has betrayed his trust, love and loyalty. He is such a charmer that you immediately fall in love with him. Bess comes into his world and he sees hope - or a glimmer of it. He is a very passionate and sexual man. If bad boy, tortured soul is what you are looking for... Then met Nick! His body alone is made to be sex on a stick and when you read his scenes... Wow, you better have a glass of ice ice ice water near you... Because Nick will take you Deeper than you have ever been...
Andy is Bess's soon to be ex-husband. Now, I did not care for him at all... From the beginning of the story... in the Now and Then, I did not like him. In the Then, he was known to play the field but swears to Bess that he loves her. You know the type: you are good enough to have my bank account because I trust you, but you are not good enough to be naughty with. He is one of those. Once a cheater, always a cheater. I can't even say something nice about him. But believe me, I wanted to slash his tires, put sugar in his gas tank and some few other things that I would rather not mention... **yea, I am evil**
Eddie: He is my sex on a stick man!!! When we meet him from the Then, he is the "geek" of the story; pimple faced, shy, fluster very easily, and very self-conscious. He is in love with Bess and there is nothing he would not do for her. I love him, from geek to man, I love him. He is the one you need to keep you eye out for. He is the rock in this story. Not where I thought it would have came from, but when I saw the how it was coming... I fell!!!
My Thoughts:
Bess bothered me. I felt that she was not as strong as I would have like to have seen her. Having gone through a divorce myself, I know how rough the situation can be and especially with children. Bess has two teenage boys that she is trying to "spare" them the burnt of the divorce. She does not want to disrupt their lives. She is a people pleaser person; she trys to keep everyone else happy or comfortable, but does not consider herself to much. She let Andy walk over her time and time again. I wanted to b*tch slap her and ask her WTH are you thinking!?:!?! While she was in college, she lived at her families beach house and worked part time. I did admire her for that. She did what was needed, she pushed through life when she kinda had no one, but (gessh) Andy there with her. Until she met Nick.... the life she thought she knew, slowly started to slip away like the sands of the beach themselves. She was pushed out of her comfort zone. And we all know how we are felt when we are pushed out of comfort zone... it is not nice.
I will put a twist on this... Eddie was my hero in this book. You will see why, I promise. He was the rock throughout the whole book.
Now, this book deals with things of the past that we need to let go of. It is about things we never say that we should say. You never know when you day will come... and the question you need to ask is "do people know what you really meant to say? do they know how much you love them or how much you hurt them??"
Holding on to the past does not change our future. What you decide to do with what you holding is another story. Bess is literally holding onto to something that is no longer. Nick.
Hussy purring over the sex scenes. They were amazing, and there were a lot of them!! But this book is an erotic novel. But at the same time, to me this was more a love story than an erotic novel.
The cover meant more to me when I finished the book. It really captures the story. This book really is a deep book... pun intended! Nick is her sea... sea of lost love.

ReplyDeleteAnd mmm another sex on a stick man, how you tempt me with those, lol
Great review Cecile. I don't read a whole lot of contemporary but may have to give this one a try. No one can pimp a book like you!!!

Great Review Cecile! Thanks for your honesty.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, I find myself way more critical of the heroine vs the hero. I dislike the heroines with no back bone and I dislike the heroines with too much back bone. Where's the happy medium??
It seems to me that Megan Hart likes people-pleaser heroines. Anne of 'Tempted' inspired the same irritation for me that Bess seems to have had for you. It'll be interesting to see of my reactions mirror yours.
;) VFG
What an awesome review! You never fail to brighten my day. :)
ReplyDeleteThere is an award waiting for you at my blog:
http://missysbooknook.blogspot.com/2009/07/heartfelt-award.html
Awesome review Cecile! I have this one sitting right here on the computer desk!!
ReplyDeleteVampFanGirl ~ Hey Honey!!! Thanks!!! You are more than welcome... You know how I roll... honesty will always prevail with me!!!
ReplyDeleteI guess I want a woman with more balls... or of some sort. I want her to stand tall and proud. To not take no for an answer. I am not sure if there is a happy medium. I still love the woman, butI just more out of her. I am not a big weak woman fan. I believe we have come to far to sit on the side lines of life and just let things be because someone said so. **WOMAN POWER** Wow, where in the hell did that come from, lol!!!!
I am seeing that trend too with Megan's women. Grace was really the one Heroine that was a take no crap woman (keep in mind I have not read Dirty yet). Sadie, I gave her reason to be weak... I mean the accident was enough to make me want to give her husband whatever he wanted too. Am I making scene??
Oh, yea... Anne pissed me sometimes for NOT having the back bone to speak her mind. But when she blew up with the MIL... I died!!!
Missy ~ Oh thank you so much for the sweet award!!!! Thank you for the kind words of my review!!!
Blanche ~ *Blushing* Thank you so very much!!! Oh Blanche, you have to let me know when you read it!!!I want to see what you have to say about it!!!
I read Megan's work in the past and really enjoyed it so I bought Deeper without a thought.
ReplyDeleteThen someone told me what's going on in regards to Nick and I have to say, not my favorite thing to read about. Hate it actually. But I'm still going to read this.
Great review!
Cecile,I was very much looking forward to your review of Deeper. As always, I was not disappointed. Of all of Megan's books, this one is not my favorite. I didn't like the back and forth of Then and Now, but mostly (and I am a HUGE paranormal fan) I just didn't get the whole "Nick coming back" deal. I have many thoughts, but it looks like many of your fans have not read the book so I'll zip my lip.
ReplyDeleteI did come away with a slightly different perspective after reading your review. I certainly looked at Eddie in a different light :) and I did like how the book ended. I did like the book-Hart never disappoints in the "sex" department and Nick is written very well. This book seemed so "separate" though as no one from previous books made cameo appearances (or did I miss it) and that's one of the things I love about her books too.
So, do we have to wait a year for her next one?
:)Lisa
Hey Ames!! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that you could make it over to my place!!! That is how I feel about her work as well. That no matter what it is, I am going to pick it up. She has become an automatic buy for me.
Deeper ~ please let me know as soon as you read it (in case you do not do a review of it) because I would love to know your thoughts. In regard to the Nick situation. It was not my favorite, but I got Eddie out of the deal!! And oh boy is he yummy!! His manners, character, and the way he was just always there!!! Gotta love a man like that!
Hope to see you around more often!!!
Have a great Monday!
****Don't read if you don't want to know... This post contains a spoiler******
ReplyDeleteHey Pelehini (aka Lisa)
Thank you for your kind words!! That touches me, really!
I do have to agree with you that out of her books that I have read so far, this is not my favorite either. I am glad that it was not just me either that did not like the going back and forth thing either. Like I said, sometimes, I would just skip and read all the thens... then go back to the now.
I figured out the Nick thing when Bess went into the "spirit shop."
Nick's ghost haunted her because he could not rest. She did not know what really happened to him. And without knowing, he was just there... "in the gray."
I have only read one other "ghost" story and I loved the way that one was pulled off (In The Midnight Hour by Kimberly Rayne). But this one... I don't know... What got me was that if he was a trapped spirited how come everyone at the house (her kids and the kids friend... especially the girl he was rubbing up on and kissing) could see him, hear him, feel him and all that.... I could understand if Nick would just for Bess's eyes only... but... still.
I am glad that I could show you another perspective to the book. Especially in regards to Eddie!! He was my honey in this book!
And yes, I did love how the book ended! That made me heart smile!
You are right about Hart never failing us in the HUSSY SEX part of the books! Because OMG... Sex with Nick (THEN & NOW).... OMG!!! HAWT!!!
I agree with you, I was a tad bit disappointed that no one from other books made any appearances. I kinda like that about her books. You don't have to read them in any order, but it is nice to know they are connected in some way shape or form (hahaha, thinking of Nick in his form)
I can not wait to see what has in store for us next!!
She has become an automatic buy for me!!!Thanks for stopping by... and if you want to talk more about it, just put in the beginning of your comment that it contains possible spoilers, so commenters can skip it, because I would love to know more of your thoughts!
Hope you have a wonderful Monday!
Joe (from Broken) made appearances (p.236), he and Sadie got married.
ReplyDeleteOMG... I never put those two together!!!!!! OMG!!!! How could I have missed that... To wrapped up in the Nick world... I do owe my apologies then!!!! And yes, for those of you that are in question, I took out my book and it is Joe and Sadie!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Anymo. Not sure who you are, but you are more than weclome to hang out anytime!! Thanks for the priceless information!!!
I have only read Tempted by Megan Hart and I'm riding a two way feeling. I love her story and characters but her ending of Tempted was soooo uber bittersweet that I had to digest it for a couple of days. Now I am looking, pondering on what book to read next because I have a feeling her endings are mostly like that.
ReplyDeleteI loved your review Cecile, as a divorce kid I'd say you can't spare your kids everything, how hard a mother tries. And I don't like my heroine's weak, they don't always need to be strong but at some point I'd like to see some backbone!
Anonymous....you are so right! I didn't catch it, though, because I had not read Broken yet. I had it on back order at Amazon for weeks and it kept showing out of stock so I had my sister check a Border's on Maui and viola!!!! It was there and she mailed it to me. So now my collection is complete!
ReplyDeleteLeontine-yes, Tempted had a tough ending. I'm not sure how I wanted it to go. But don't give up on Hart-her books are amazing and thought provoking. Maybe try Dirty next. I did not read them in order, but I would say read Dirty before Stranger. Would you agree Cecile?
Ok, really looking forward to this Eddie character to get me over Nick and his situation. LOL
ReplyDeleteHave you read Megan's Spice Briefs? I haven't taken the plunge on those yet.
I have not read any of the Spice's yet... but as soon as my pocketbook will allow me, I will be looking for more Megan Hart to feel my greedy little hands with!!!
