Heroin

By Violetta Vane

I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can
'Cause it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
And I'll tell you, things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know
-”Heroin”, 1967, The Velvet Underground

I heard that song at a young, impressionable age. Heroin chic hit me hard. Something about the heroism of ego nullification, maybe. I don’t blame the song. It’s honest about that.

Luckily, I also had an honest, down-to-earth counterpoint. My mother used to tell me stories of junkies she knew back in the sixties, wasted and ailing, ignoring the crying children that sometimes trailed behind them.

So I’ve never done heroin and I certainly don’t feel the lack. But there are so many other people who’ve felt heroin’s particular pleasure-death urge, and have written or spoken or sung about it. It’s a weirdly artistic drug, although not an upscale one in terms of class. It’s sophisticated. Urban. Popular imagination codes crack cocaine as racially black, meth as white, whereas heroin is malignantly multiracial.

When we meet our character Sean O’Hara in “Cruce de Caminos,” he’s a heroin addict and a street kid. He would have been a teen runaway if he’d actually run away from home, instead of walking away in silence, with no one calling his name to come back. He has a girlfriend he loves (we treat this love as seriously as their age and circumstances allow) and his girlfriend is also a heroin addict. Heroin—doing it, getting it, needing it—mediates their relationship. She’s already a prostitute, and by the end of the story, he becomes one too.

He needed a meaning, a purpose, and found one in heroin. It satisfies him on a visceral level and an intellectual level. Like most of us, he has no blazing prodigal talent to provide an automatic answer to the question, “Why do I matter to the world?”. He was always an outsider—not as well-off, not as white as the people he grew up around—so he posed that question to himself more intensely than most.

It’s scary and sad to put yourself in the head of someone like that. But I think it also teaches us radical compassion. Sean has made a very bad decision to turn away from life, to take up the faux-heroic quest of self-nullification, but that doesn’t make him evil or wholly weak. He still has empathy, curiosity, a sense of wonder, moral urges. He knows how selfish his addiction is making him, and he fights against that.

We don’t explain how he found his life purpose in heroin. In his eyes, it was probably a very romantic, glamorous moment. By the time of “Cruce de Caminos,” he’s already in darker days, further down the path, although like the song says, he still doesn’t know just where he’s going.

About “Cruce de Caminos”, out now from Riptide Publishing:

Addiction drives Sean O'Hara to a critical crossroads. Will he make the right decision, or will the floodwaters bound for New Orleans sweep him away?

Street kid Sean O’Hara never had it easy, but New Orleans has driven him to his knees. His girlfriend’s broken up with him for a sugar daddy, a gun-toting pimp has robbed him of everything but the clothes on his back, and he’s down to his last two OxyContin. Sean’s no seasoned streetwalker, but he’s not above it either, not when he’s already itching for his next fix.

A familiar-seeming stranger named Ángel may be his ticket to some quick cash, but only if Sean’s willing to help him indulge a high-class john’s weird fetish for the night. As Ángel tells him, in this city and this business, you have to get a little weird to survive.

When night falls on the French Quarter, Sean realizes Ángel and the john want more from him than he was expecting to give. What once seemed merely strange soon crosses the line into supernatural and sinister. And Ángel, the man Sean had viewed as a partner and protector, might also be his otherworldly judge and executioner.

Release date: May 29, 2012

BUY LINK

The Pact of Seduction has one rule—fulfill your ultimate fantasy. Bella’s problem, she can’t live up to her vow. But her failure spins events that lead her into unknown territory. Kole, a Dom at the sex club Castle Dolce Vita, wasn’t part of her fantasy, but he’s about to show her he should have been.
Kole is more than willing to introduce Bella to BDSM since he’s held an interest in her for some time. But the feisty woman isn’t easily tamed and her strong personality proves to be difficult. While she might be determined to keep him at a distance, Kole has other ideas. He won’t allow her to shut him out.
A pact between best friends brought them together, emotional barriers tear them apart. Kole skillfully reminds Bella through pleasure and punishment that she is now his submissive, and her place is under his command.
Publisher’s Note: This book contains explicit sexual situations, graphic language, and material that some readers may find objectionable: BDSM theme and elements, including spanking.

Only one thing would save Bella now—a stiff drink. Reed and Kole’s parties were always fun, and it was nice to see new friends she’d made over the past month. But her mood was right in the toilet. It’d been that way all day and had only gotten worse since she joined the party. She shouldn’t have come.
She cursed on a low breath. How in the hell was she going to get out of her current predicament? Originally, it’d been she who offered the idea of the pact of seduction, and she couldn’t even commit. Pathetic.

Marley’s giggle drew her attention, and Reed had pulled her onto his lap, nibbling at her neck. As horrible as it was, jealously surged. Maybe she had hoped that her fantasy would fill that empty void in her soul. Sure, it was meant as something sexually fun, but Bella craved something…

A part of her remained unfulfilled, even if she didn’t understand exactly what was missing. All she knew, her life at this moment was boring with a side of totally sucks.

She glanced over at Kyra, who laughed with Sadie, and nudged her arm. “I’ll be back. I need some air.”
“Sure.” Kyra’s green eyes were a little glassy. The wine clearly had gotten to her. “Want some company?”

“Nah.” She plastered on a fake smile. “I won’t be long.”

Kyra gave a nod, then turned her attention back at Sadie as the two chuckled about something Sadie had said. If only Bella had something to laugh about. She rose from the couch and made her way through the crowd.

As she passed, she noticed a man sitting on the ottoman and a woman knelt at his feet with her arms over his legs. The position appeared casual enough, but it also looked…different. As if the woman enjoyed being at his feet. Another spurt of jealously soared, and she gave her head a good hard shake. She was apparently envious of everyone who had a relationship. And since when had she been jealous of a BDSM relationship?

What’s gotten into you?

She made her way through the living room and stepped out onto the balcony. The cool air brushed against her skin, and she shivered. Winter still hung on in Baltimore, but what a strange winter it’d been—snow one day, mild the next. Tonight was brisk, but that only seemed to help cool off the annoyance burning her blood.

With her glass in her hands, she leaned on the railing and glanced over the city. Reed and Kole’s condo had an amazing view and the lights twinkled below.

She sipped at her drink and pondered her situation. How could she plan another fantasy when the only one she wanted she had yet to fully accept herself? And why was she acting like a bitter idiot?
After a long gulp that had her cringing from the aftertaste, a deep voice interrupted her useless thoughts. “I heard last night didn’t go well.”

She lowered the glass, licked the moisture on her lips, and looked next to her to find Kole. Like always in his presence, butterflies fluttered in her stomach, but she squashed them and kept her voice controlled. “That’s putting it lightly.”

His blond stylish hair framed a face worth a second look, and his dark blue eyes shone with a power that made her melt. He leaned against the railing beside her, cocked his head, and she felt the weight of his stare right down to her toes. “Tell me about it.”

She sipped her drink, mortified to her bones that she had to admit this to Kole. “It wasn’t Raven’s fault. I”—she drew in a deep breath and said quickly—“I always thought my fantasy was to be with a woman, but clearly it’s not.”

“Ah, I see.” He took a gulp of his beer before he lowered it. “You didn’t get off, I’m assuming?”
She snorted. “If laughing in her face means that I didn’t get off, then yes, I didn’t get off.”
He chuckled, the sound so seductive Bella quivered. In response to that odd reaction, she examined him and couldn’t stop from admiring the view.

He was dressed in a pair of dark jeans that no doubt hugged his fine ass, and a black T-shirt that was snug around the muscles beneath. Good God. She licked her lips for reasons that had nothing to do with her drink.

“You didn’t follow through with your part of the pact, then?”

Her gaze lifted to his face. The glint in his eyes declared he’d been quite aware of her admiring him. Hell, she’d lusted after him since the day they met. A strong sexual attraction existed between them that she hadn’t experienced before with any man, especially a Dom.

She blinked and focused away from the warmth that formed between her thighs. “That’s right. I bailed on the pact.”

His gaze became penetrating as his tone dipped lower. “Why don’t you arrange another night with someone else for your fantasy?”

“Because”—her muscles stiffened, and after a long sigh, she grimaced—“I have no idea what that fantasy is now.”

“Such a problem for a woman to have,” he mused.

She gulped at the way his voice seemed to carry into her soul; then she lowered her head to avoid eye contact with him. He raised his bottle to his mouth, and his arm brushed against hers. Tingles zinged through her, and she squeezed her thighs together to ease the throb of her clit.

How did he make her body do that? Every time he was near, she all but sizzled, and when he touched her, everything was amplified.

“I see that you need help, then, in finding what you’re looking for.”

It hadn’t sounded like a question, which she was glad for since her tight throat made it impossible to answer. He slid his finger along her arm, slowly and with clear intent to unravel her.

She bit her bottom lip. “W-what does that mean?”

He tucked his finger under her chin and lifted her head. “I think we both know what I mean.” Those eyes of his burned with the lust that he had obviously contained. “You enjoy my attention, and I’d enjoy you under my command.”

Then he pressed a finger on the back of her hand and danced his touch up her arm. His gaze followed his caresses every step of the way. And damn him if she didn’t close her eyes and shudder.

A scrape of his nail along her skin drew her eyes open, and he grinned with sin. “Look how beautifully you react to me.” He finally reached her shoulder, and she trembled under the softness of his touch that seemed to contradict that power oozing from him. He tucked his fingers back under her chin, drew her head up, and stared intently into her eyes.

Searching for what, she had no idea.

His hold tensed, a shift in his gaze appeared that made her stomach flip-flop, and her panties were now soaked. He leaned in, pressed his lips against hers, and the world froze. His luscious and damn well perfect mouth molded with hers as his silky tongue swept her away. When had anyone ever kissed her like this?

Oh, right—never.

He kissed her thoroughly, leaving no part of her mouth untouched; then he backed away but kept hold of her chin. “It’s time to stop ignoring what your body needs and accept that you want to be dominated.”
Hell, how right was he? Maybe BDSM wasn’t her fantasy when she made the pact of seduction with her friends, but after hearing about it from Marley, her interest had grown. She lifted a lazy shoulder to appear nonchalant. “I suppose if I set up a scene with you, that would be a solution to my problem.”

“Not good enough.” His gaze hardened. “Do you want me to take you into a scene, Bella?”

At his pause, she realized she needed to give a better answer, and she nodded. “I do.”

He examined her for a long moment before he finally said, “Now what are your interests in BDSM?”
She melted at the way he stared at her now. So intense. So wicked. Was this a hint of what he’d look like in a scene? Her body flushed, yet she held her focus and lifted her chin. She had always prided herself on staying strong around powerful men.

Her job as a stockbroker in Baltimore’s top lending investment firm meant she swam with the sharks. Most of her coworkers were authoritative men. If she’d showed weakness, she wouldn’t be where she was today, and she’d worked hard for her position.

“I’m interested in”—her throat went dry. All these fantasies she hadn’t admitted to anyone. Was she really going through with this? Her soaking panties declared it so—“ropes, sex toys, floggers, to be controlled, pleasure, and pain.” She raised her glass to her mouth and tried to ignore the way her hands shook.
Before the rim could reach her lips, Kole snatched the glass from her hands and set it on the ground next to him. “If we’re discussing this and you are serious, you will stop drinking.”

A flare of irritation rose up that he’d be so bold to take her drink right out of her hands, yet Marley had said that Castle Dolce Vita Doms never allowed submissives to drink alcohol in a scene to ensure they were clearheaded. And since they were discussing what would happen between them, she let it go. “Okay.”
He gave a short nod. “Now I want to make sure you’re well aware of what will happen and what I expect of you.” His gaze searched hers, seemingly looking right through her. “And I need to be sure that I’m the correct Dom for you.”

“I don’t want anyone else,” she blurted out before she could stop herself.

His eyebrows rose. “I don’t mind your answer, Bella.” A small grin turned up the corners of his mouth. “But do tell—have you put more thought into this than you’re letting on?”
Her cheeks had never burned so hot, but she wouldn’t be that woman who’d stumble around a man. She stuffed her nervousness away, clasped her hands, and demanded her voice to be strong. “Maybe once or twice.”

She’d been aware of the mutual attraction between them, so two could play his game. “Are you trying to deny you haven’t thought about it too?”

He winked. “Maybe once or twice.”

A flutter whipped around inside her, her palms grew clammy, and she squeezed her fingers. Why did he make her act so…knocked off her axis?

“One thing that needs to be discussed is my expectations.” He glanced at her hands for a moment as if he took in her reaction before he looked back into her eyes. “From what I know of you as you are now, you’d struggle to meet them. And I want to make that clear so you know what you’re getting yourself into.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” she snapped. “Why would I struggle to meet your demands?”
He gave his head a slow shake. “I’m not saying it to insult you, but to give you a stern warning. I don’t play lightly.”

“Well, I…” Her entire face burned hot as if she had a high-grade fever. Marley had told her all about Kole. How he enjoyed pain play. How strict he was in how a submissive behaved. And all it’d done was increase the throb between her thighs. Solidified the fantasy. “I think I might like that.”

He gave a delicious smile. “I have no doubt you would.”

And then his lips were back on hers as he swept her away in another leg-wobbling kiss before those plush lips tore away from hers.

“You’ll arrive at the castle next Friday at seven o’clock. I’ll have a room reserved.” He dropped his head, his eyes in the direct line of hers. “When you arrive, remove your clothes, kneel in the center of the room, and wait for me. Clear?”

Heat spread across her body at the images playing in her head. Nude? Kneeling? Oh God! She quivered in anticipation.

At his expectant expression, she nodded instead of offering him a breathy response.
“Good.” He took her mouth again playfully, nibbled on the corners of her lips, and flicked her lips with his tongue. And when he had her body ramped up to a fever pitch, he backed away to trail his thumb over her lips. “Can you be honest and open with me?”

Drool, honest-to-God drool, formed in her mouth. Everyday Kole was sexy. Dom Kole was to die for. The sheer power that exuded from him, intensity in his features, it all captivated her. He’d asked her to be honest with him—how hard could that be? “I can do that.”

He nodded in approval, skimmed her mouth again with his thumb, while his gaze stayed focused there. The smile he gave, the possessiveness held in the depths of his eyes, liquefied her insides.

Something sparked through his touch, only increasing with his kiss, and even more so by the way he looked at her now. One of those duh moments. Had what she wanted—desired—been standing right in front of her this entire time?

In less than a week, she’d have the answer.

Stacey Kennedy’s erotic romance novels are just that…erotic. There is nothing better than taking the dominant men she loves and watching them do wicked things to their women. But she just can’t write without a little humor added into the mix so that’s always a must have in her stories. And of course what’s a story without a big dose of emotional characters, too. Blurb:

What most people call a hellish shift, Josh Caplan calls a normal evening. After all, he works nights at a convenience store beside the mouth of hell, selling snacks to zombies and lizard men.

Some monsters are odder—and more dangerous—than most. Like the rampaging, oversized mustache who skips the Pringles and eats the customers instead. Or Cthulhu’s half-brother Stan, who doesn't know how to take no for an answer . . . or where to put all those tentacles.

But killer facial hair and inept hentai beasts pale in comparison to the monster even other monsters fear. When hell’s big boss demands a sit-down with Josh, she reveals a destiny bigger than he’d ever imagined—or wanted. You'd think preventing the apocalypse would net Josh more than minimum wage and a hot vampire boyfriend, but it turns out saving the world can be a pretty thankless job.

This title is #3 of the Josh of the Damned series.

I obtained the following information from Riptide Publishing.

For those of you that know me... and those that don't this is my little statement about short books.... I do not judge short stories on the rush of their relationships, because they are just that - short stories. So with that said.... here is my review...

First of all, a big thank you to Ms. Cecile for having me today! Since the Smutty Hussy and I share a love of all things most awesomely smutastic, I thought I’d talk a bit today about one of my favorite topics—sex. I’m not too shy to admit that I love writing the smex. A lot. Readers and other writers often ask what inspires me to write a love scene. It’d be easier to list what doesn’t inspire me to write hot sex. For those wondering, my high school algebra teacher and Steve Buscemi top that list. But let’s get back to what does go into creating those sexy times.

For me, it always starts with the characters. If I’ve done my job right, the sexual tension between the hero and heroine should be at the boiling point before the clothes start coming off. I want them to be panting with the desperate need to get  nekkid and busy between the sheets, on the kitchen table, the bathroom sink, the garden shed, the drive through at McDonalds (Would you like that orgasm supersized? Yeah, you know you do.)

So what might be some of the sexual stimuli responsible for getting my hero and heroine hot and bothered?  Sometimes it’s as simple as a touch. A teasing brush of his fingers across the heroine’s nape. Add to that maybe a certain look in his eyes. You know the one. That ‘Baby, if we weren’t standing in the lawn tractor aisle at Home Depot right now, I’d mow your turf six ways to Sunday’ sparkle in his eye. In case you didn’t know, the potent combination of lawn equipment, power tools and fertilizer fumes does weird things to the male brain. Call it the perfect trifecta of horniness, if you will. But back to our hero and heroine. By now, she’s experiencing that delicious, shivery anticipation of more skin on skin contact with her hero. She starts imagining the glide of his fingers along more intriguing places than the nape of her neck. Maybe there are more tactile sensations involved as well. The rasp of his beard stubble across her breasts, her stomach…lower…

…lower…

Yeah, right there—

Attention shoppers, all hanging geranium baskets are currently half off!

Don’t you hate it when the perky sales announcer interrupts just when things are getting good? This of course mimics what my characters frequently go through during their constant dance of seduction. Instead of dirt cheap geraniums, the culprit for nookie blocking might initially be the hero and heroine’s own stubbornness. Or maybe we’ll blame it on the pain-in-the-ass neighbor who always picks the worst time to borrow a cup of sugar.  Just you wait, pain-in-the-ass neighbor. That cup of sugar won’t mean jack in chapter eight when the zombies get you.

But I digress. Back to our poor heroine. It’s safe to assume that her anticipation isn’t the only thing quivering at this point. Thanks to her lusty thoughts and the sexual cues coming from our hero, every nerve ending in her body is primed and ready. Each breath she drags in is saturated with the sultry promise of sex. She can already feel his strong, powerful body over her, inside her, and the wanton ache of needing him is both tormenting and oh so delicious.

There’s only one thought in her mind now.  You know the one.

Honey Buns, if we weren’t standing in the lawn tractor aisle at Home Depot right now, I’d rock your world better than a Toro 12 amp variable speed electric blower.  That’s right. With variable speed. Oooh mama.

The above scenario is just a brief glimpse into the process that goes into setting the mood for my characters. As you can see, inspiration can strike from unlikely sources, and what might not be immediately perceived as sexy. So how about you? What are your sexy mood triggers? Leave your answer in the comments, and I’ll put you in the running for a $10 eGiftcard from Samhain Publishing! Because nothing says sexy like ebooks…except maybe a variable speed electric blower.

Blurb for Cat Scratch Fever

Who says a wolf can’t make a pussycat purr?

Perfect timing has never been Lilly Prescott’s long suit. Seconds before a showdown with werewolf Dante Morgan, who owns a property that by rights should belong to her, she goes into heat. Not a simple event for a lynx shifter. No, she’s doomed to weeks of frustration that can only be soothed by frequent rolls in the hay—or her hand. Unfortunately, Dante accidentally witnesses the latter.

Left shaken and highly aroused in the snow, Dante can’t believe he’s attracted to the woman who drives him crazy, and not in a good way. Worse, his father has issued an ultimatum. Marry, or abdicate his place as pack leader. On the other hand, it’s the perfect leverage. Lilly will get her land…in exchange for a wedding ring and all the sexual satisfaction she can handle.

Marry Dante? No doubt he’s a poster boy for Hunks ’R’ Us, but he’s rude, arrogant and Lilly’s sworn enemy. Not to mention the thought of losing her independence is frightening as hell.

When they find themselves falling victim to their own charade, though, it’s anything but hell. It’s heaven, and the last thing either of them wants. The real thing.
Warning: This book contains redneck werewolves, inconvenient hormones, and a whole new use for cat toys. Uncontrollable meowing may occur.

Giveaway & Book Review: Enchanted by Josee Renard

Enchanted

Valentine’s Day is Tonia’s least favorite holiday, though it’s a big piece of the family business, a dating Web site called MatchMagic—a business she tries desperately to avoid. Her love life has always been a disaster and so, even though she’s been lusting after James and Jeff, who run the bakery around the corner from her apartment, she’s avoided getting involved. Now, thanks to her great-aunt Dorothea and her real magic, Tonia can’t resist them any longer. She’s going to spend her Valentine’s Day showing James and Jeff just what one woman can do with two handsome men.

I obtained the above information from Ms. Josee's website.

This really was a quick book coming in under 20 pages... But let me tell you it was quick and short and to the point but it gave me a great story! I am new reader of Ms. Josee Renard and I will be looking forward to the next book in this series.

We meet Tonia and Jeff and James... And Oh Boy what a combination these three make! I feel I must warn you though that Tonia is no ordinary woman... She has a little magic running in her family lines! So, she is a little extra special! Now, I have to say that one of my favorite things about this book is it takes place in a little coffee shop (actually above)! ;) I love coffee shops and to know that this kind of action could happen above one of my favorite places... Well... It is just adds that extra spice to my next trip... And who knows... My next cup of java just might be Enchanted!

What's next......................

Enchanted Spring

When Jamieson receives an invitation to do some promotion for a dating site called MatchMagic, he says yes, but he’ll need a little help. Connie’s lost her job, so when one of the owners of MatchMagic ask if she’s interested in a job, she doesn’t hesitate.

But MatchMagic is more than just a website—it’s run by three real witches who are happy to test that magic on the two of them. Working with Jamieson isn’t easy, dreaming of licking him all over makes it impossible.

When Jamieson and Connie give in to the magic, their working day becomes combustible.

I obtained the above information from Ms. Josee's website.

                             **Excerpt**

An excerpt from the latest in my Enchanted series – Enchanted Spring

Connie twisted her hands in her lap. No service job was going to pay her enough to stay here, to pay her back taxes, to go back to the life she’d had just six weeks ago. She had to tell Dorothea the truth.
Holding out the letter with her notice and apology, she tried to hide the tears that welled up in her eyes.
Dorothea waved off the letter. “You’re not leaving,” she said, with a quick glance at Deborah, and Connie wondered yet again whether the women had a touch of the sight, because otherwise, how the hell did they know what Connie was going to say?
Half an hour later, Connie had a new job helping with some promotional work they were having done—at least they thought she did—and a reduction in her rent. And nothing she’d done or said could sway the two women.
But Jamieson Smith?
She’d been drooling over him since she’d moved onto Courtwood Street, even knowing she’d never have a chance with him. The women—the many, many women—he dated? They looked like runway models. Rich runway models.
But what choice did she have? If the sisters had their way, she was going to be working with him on a promotion campaign for MatchMagic and, from the martial look in Dorothea’s eyes, Jamieson Smith would have no choice about hiring her. Didn’t matter how tough he was, no one could deny the sisters.

* * * * *

They had summoned him to another meeting. He hadn’t even had time to wrap his head around a campaign for a dating Web site—he, Jamieson Smith, the last man who knew anything about true love and romance—and yet here they were, demanding his presence already.
He laughed as he opened the door to MatchMagic. He could hardly wait to see what they had planned for him this afternoon. Just the thought of them, so much like his family, made him happy. Maybe not the work so much, but those three women? They were great.
What he hadn’t expected was to see the woman he watched walk by his home office every morning, the woman he’d lusted after for months. Oh, he knew he couldn’t have her—just that daily glimpse of her told him that she wasn’t his type. Too sweet, too short, too curvy. But there was something about her that tempted him, even though he was pretty sure she’d want a relationship. But he couldn’t stop staring, couldn’t keep from making certain that he was at his desk each morning at seven o’clock when she left for work.
He was obsessed by her… and that’s why he’d promised himself he’d never meet her in person.
The three witches—as he’d dubbed them to go along with the name of their Web site, and damn, that was a pretty good way into a spring promotion blitz—were waiting for him. This time, though, there were four women around the boardroom table, and his eyes—and his nose (she smelled like spring)—locked on the fourth one.
“Jamieson?” Delia’s voice jolted him out of his reverie.
He shook his head to clear the scent of Connie and focused on the witches. “Sorry, I had an idea for your promotion. Just let me jot it down.” He took out his notepad and wrote a few words down: Witch. Magic. Spring solstice.
When he looked up again, all four sets of eyes were on him. He felt his cheeks flush and couldn’t remember the last time that had happened. These women, especially that woman, were getting to him.
“Jamieson Smith, this is Connie Stanton. She’s going to be helping you with the promotion you’re doing for us. She’s spent years working as a technical writer and assistant. Add her services to your account.” Dorothea sounded as regal as a short, almost-seventy-year-old woman could sound.
He started to shake his head, but Deborah broke in before he could speak. “We have a feeling about this,” she said. “We want you and Connie to do this together.”
He frowned, and she said firmly, “Work it out.”

Review: Undercover Lover by Tibby Armstrong

Good girl Jenny Ainsley never hoped for more than her nine-to-five existence. But when the sinfully sexy bodyguard her famous brother hired to protect her is drawn into a plot to take down an international drug syndicate, she finds herself an unwilling participant. She soon realizes she has the opportunity to break away from her timid past and do something important. And getting her hot bodyguard into bed will be a delicious bonus. He resists her at every turn, however, and she discovers that no amount of training—or seduction—can crack the code to this man’s heart.

Ex-MI-5 agent Günter Faust is no stranger to watching over the sexy Jenny Ainsley. For years he’s seen to her safety, hiding in the shadows and pining for the woman he can never have. Bedding a client is not an option. But fate has put her by his side, working up close and personal. And with Jenny’s relentless pursuit to seduce him, it’s only a matter of time before she blows his cover—and his heart—wide open.

I obtained the above information from Ms. Tibby's website!

I was given this book for my honest thoughts by Elloras Cave... So, let's get this review started!

First, let me say that I am not a new reader of Ms. Tibby. I have read the other story... Sheet Music (click on link to see my review on that one) and loved it. She is such a treat to read!

Ms. Tibby will entertain you with the story she creates, she will excite you with the suspense and drama that she stirs, she will also leave you panting with the lust and desire she swirls you around. Ms. Tibby is an author to keep your eyes on because only good things will come from her.

Let me introduce you to Jenny and Günter... Two people who will definitely rock your world. These two will take you on one hellva ride and you might not make it out alive.

Jenny's life has never been easy. She has a past that will haunt her for the rest of her life. I admire her for making the best of what life has handed her. She is not thrilled about being an accountant but it's her job and no one can take that away that from her. We have all had jobs like hers where we really don't want to work with the people we work with. But when her bother makes a visit, all that goes to hell, and her coworkers want to be her best friend! Why you might ask... Well, her brother is a famous rocker - David Tallis from Sheet Music. And living under his shadow can be a pain in the ass... But what Jenny didn't know was that David had her followed by security...... Günter....

Günter is a man you will not mess with... No matter where you see him at, you will most likely walk away... But he is so alluring, you will find yourself drawn to him.... Like a moth to the flame. And believe me, you will get burned. He is just that hot. He is man on a mission, always. His job always comes first.... But when the job, Jenny, becomes face to face with him... Things go south... Fast. But will Günter let his heart get involved when he can actually touch her and feel her....

These two actually collide with each other and things do go south very fast. The action that Ms. Tibby gives you in this story will have you turning the pages faster than you think... There is so much going on in this story but it happens at just the right pace. You get all you need.... Action, drama, fantasies, suspense, lust, desire in one story. You will fall in love with the characters, hate some of the characters, want to learn more about other characters....(HINT Simon!!!!) Ms. Tibby did a wonderful job at telling the story of David's little sister.... And the Undercover Lover.... Günter..

Review: Seducing Jason by Brandi Evans

Seducing Jason

Out now free read

Maggie wants her brother's best friend, and tonight, she's gonna make her move...

I obtained the above information from Ms. Brandi's website.

For those of you that know me... and those that don't this is my little statement about short books.... I do not judge short stories on the rush of their relationships, because they are just that - short stories. So, yes the relationships always could have been drawn out more, yea it seems like they fall in love to fast and of course the story could have been made longer... but it is a short story. So with that said.... here is my review...

What a great way to break into a new author but by a wonderful little short story. I am new to author Ms Brandi. And this is for sure... A wonderful short story. But it is more than wonderful... Hell, this is a freaking hot little number. Consider this that little black explosive dress that you keep in the back of closet to rock "his" world... You know the one.... Well, this is that kinda book.

Maggie wants Jason... Jason wants Maggie... But there is one problem.... Maggie is Charlie's baby sister.... Jason is Charlie's best friend. What is one to do when the cost of your happiness might be the downfall of two relationships.

Can two people come together and make it work? Can Maggie turn up the heat and go after what she really wants? Is she brave enough to take what she secretly desires... What she has secretly been wanting? Can she do it? Well, let's see.....

I have to say that I am not stopping at this one book by Ms. Brandi.... I am going scout out more books by her! Because Seducing Jason is not all I want, hehehehehe.....

*Giveaway* Q&A w/Ms. Cat Grant *Riptide Publishing*

Ladies and Gents of the Lair....
Please put together a warm Smutty welcome for a wonderful woman...

Ms. Cat Grant!

Hello, and thank you for joining me on my blog tour for Priceless, my new novella for Riptide Publishing’s 2012 Rentboy Collection. **Be sure to comment for a chance to win one of my backlist books!**

And here’s a little chat with Connor Morrison (who may or may not bear a strong physical resemblance to a certain actor with the initials M(ichael) F(assbender), the geeky, brilliant physics professor who falls for Wes, the young rent boy in question…

Q: Thanks for taking the time to talk with us today, Connor. Can you tell us what first attracted you to Wes?

Connor: This will probably sound cliché, but it was his mind that drew me in. The night we met he asked me about the project I was working on, and he hung on every word, eager to learn more. And quick to pick it up, too. He’s one of the few undergrads I’ve known who I can converse with as an equal. And he’s utterly adorable, too.

Q: So I imagine you were devastated when you discovered—

Connor: That my best friend hired Wes to sleep with me? Yeah, you could say that.

Q: Sorry. Didn’t mean to upset you.

Connor: (sighs) It’s fine. I should’ve known you ask these types of questions. Go on.

Q: (shuffles paper) Wes has talked to us about the rough time one of his former clients gave him. You were the one who took him to the hospital, correct?

Connor: (nods) Poor kid was covered in bruises from what that . . . monster did to him. It’s a lucky thing I was home that night.

Q: Lucky for both of you, seeing as you’re now living together. How difficult was it to forgive Wes for what he’d done?

Connor: For taking money to sleep with me? (rubs a hand over his face) Well, once the initial shock faded, I realized there was nothing to forgive. Wes did what he needed to do to pay for his education. He’s a brave, brilliant young man, and I’m fortunate to have him in my life. And happy that he’ll never have to sell himself ever again.

And now here’s a blurb to whet your appetites:

When love’s for sale, who really pays?
Connor Morrison is a 3D optics pioneer, the star of the UC Berkeley physics department, and a socially-inept workaholic. And with his dear friend and business partner, Steve Campbell, handling their investors, he’s content to remain in the shadows. That is, until he meets the gorgeous and starry-eyed physics student Wes Martin.

Wes is brilliant but broke. Ever since his scholarship fell victim to the financial crisis, he's had no choice but to sell his body to stay in school. Already half in love with Connor, Wes initially resists Steve's offer to be Connor's thirty-fifth birthday present. But in the end, Wes is too broke—and too smitten—to say no.
Connor has no idea Steve bought Wes’s attentions, and he quickly falls under the young man’s spell. Yet after one night together, Wes disappears. He can't bear to hook with a man he could so easily grow to love, but he also can’t bear to tell him the truth. Besides, if he sleeps with Connor again, there'd be no way to hide the bruises one of his regular johns loves to inflict. Only one thing to do: let Connor go. Walking away is painful, but not nearly as much as building a relationship on lies.

EPIC Award-winning author Cat Grant lives by the sea in beautiful Monterey, California, with one persnickety feline and entirely too many books and DVDs. Giveaway & Guest Post w/Joey W Hill!!

Ladies and gents of my Lair, I want you to put together a very warm and hussy welcome for an author that I love having at my place... She is just a sheer delight to have over... Please welcome...

Ms. Joey W Hill!!!

Humans vs Non-Humans : To-ma-to, to-mah-to…

So is there a difference, writing contemporary vs paranormal stories? Or, to get more specific, writing humans versus writing mermaids, angels, vampires, kelpies, garden gnomes, etc?

First off, an author is well, human, and no matter how she tries, 90% of her viewpoint is still going to be homo sapiens. Second, her audience is human, and if characters become too different, the reader is not going to be able to empathize or even have a frame of reference. It explains why George Burns as God probably won a lot more converts than Moses’s burning bush (if most of you went blank on that reference, I will feel very old!). But does that mean we can’t have a realistic paranormal hero or heroine? Of course not. The key is finding the balance between the differences and similarities.

Paranormal characters are different from us physically, yes. But for me, the vital aspect of finding the balance is in the mental side of things, the way the mind of a paranormal being would work. Of course, I probably get a little too fascinated by that side of things, to the point I sometimes neglect the physical differences. This week, I was writing a great scene between a vampire and the 1700s Scottish farmer he’s going to eventually make his servant. He rescues him from a battlefield, and there’s a whole complicated scene between them that is going just great…until I realized I set the whole thing in broad daylight. My vampire would be fried like goat cheese on that bloodsoaked field.

Anyhow, I digress. The great thing about us is the reach of our imaginations. When a paranormal author puts her brain on a yoga and cardio workout to push past that 90% homo sapiens viewpoint, she can get to the 10% “other”. The track to get there is realizing our own species is a template for writing about other species. We have tons of cultures and belief systems, and yes, in some cases they are VERY different. But certain things are the same – we fear, we love, we grieve, we wonder and we get mad. We also don’t know every damn thing, and we all have ways of coping with that, good and bad. Why would mermaids, vampires, angels, etc be any different?

So keeping in mind the mechanical differences (so your readers don’t laugh at you when your mermaid sighs underwater), and the soul-deep similarities, the interesting part is the middle ground. Exploring, within the context of a story, how human and paranormal minds differ around that similar emotional core – the cultural differences. And what happens when they clash or try to mesh.

As a reader, it bores me to tears when a paranormal creature is so physiologically different but exactly like humans in terms of his/her thinking. For instance, many of you know the angsty “oh woe is me, I’m a beautiful, immortal vampire and I can’t stand myself” vampire makes me want to go find a stake and put him out of his misery (Edward is an exception. I would never mar Rob Pattinson’s beautiful form that way.)

I write born vampires as well as made ones, neither of which beat their breasts about what they are. In fact, they consider themselves far superior to humans. Which leads to my next point. When I get into the heads of paranormal creatures, there’s always a basic rule set that differentiates them from humans in their thinking, and I stick to those rules as I write them.

In my Vampire Queen series, while vampires value humans as servants, they never see them as equals. Falling in love with one is illegal and, more importantly, considered as tasteless as deciding to handfast with one’s St. Bernard. So when I write my Vampire Queen series books and have vampire-servant interactions that cross those lines, I have to write the vampire’s reaction to it believably as they deal with that paradigm shift. As they are not sentimental types, they don’t adjust in a gushy/mushy way. If they determine they are in love with their servant, that’s likely going to be between the vampire and the vampire, and not shared easily with the human, even if he/she senses it.

Now, immortality causes some other differences in thinking. In my latest release, In the Company of Witches, my hero Mikhael is a 1300 year old Dark Guardian, an angel/sorcerer who serves Lucifer and the Underworld. He’s been around long enough to see history repeat itself—again and again—so he has a certain passive calm about life developments that we under-the-one-century-mark adolescents don’t. That’s reflected in his character. Because of that, sometimes he’ll share a little of his thought processes, not only to help readers empathize, but to give them an interesting twist in a mind we don’t entirely understand (again, here’s where the mental yoga helps, tapping into the cosmic mysteries of the universe, or—ahem— just making stuff up).

This is an argument Mikhael is having with a Light Guardian, Derek Stormwind (who was the hero of the first book in the series, Something About Witches).

“You even the scales for the Light, Derek. I do it for the Dark. It may be for the same goal, but it’s from different sides. I work from the shadows, you work in the light of the sun.”

Mikhael’s gaze shifted. Derek turned to see Ruby and Raina standing there. They knew them too well, apparently. Ruby’s face was tight with concern, but it was to Raina Mikhael’s attention went, knowing she’d heard his last statement. He couldn’t tell much from her expression, but she was listening. Waiting.

He came back to Derek. “When a civilization becomes so prosperous it gets lazy and falls into entitlement, decadence, apathy and inertia, my job is to push them into brutality and hardship to accelerate change, bring the scales back to rights. You may save a child to ward off evil; I will cause its death for the same purpose.”

He heard Ruby’s indrawn breath, but he wouldn’t look toward either woman, not now. “Without struggle, there is no character and strength. But some force has to provide that adversity. We work for the same goal, but on sides that can never be reconciled.”

“I would have taken the thirteenth straw.”

“Yes, you would have. And it would have been the wrong thing to do. I was the right person for the job.”

But then, after we introduce this hard-to-understand side of Mikhael, we also have Raina reflecting on getting closer to him, something we understand a little better:

He’d been quiet since his one-on-one with Derek. They drove back to Sweet Dreams, but when they reached the driveway entrance, she wanted to walk, so they left the car. As Raina glanced over her shoulder, she saw it shimmer and disappear. Back to the Underworld garage. Thinking about the train set, she wondered what other things Mikhael had in that cache deep in the Earth. An old toy from his youth, a picture of his mother, all indications of what he was, other than a Dark Guardian.

She knew the dangers of this kind of thinking. People were many layers, yes, but there was always one main layer to them, and she’d seen plenty of women engage in disastrous relationships by rationalizing away that one layer, giving too much weight to the less important ones. Mikhael had made it clear. He’d decided centuries ago to be a Dark Guardian, and he had no regrets or doubts in that choice. Perhaps he’d struggled with ostracism from friends like Derek, or the terrible things he’d had to do, but his one overriding layer was Dark Guardian.

Except for the unexpected bomb drop in the alley, she’d noticed he rarely talked about the specifics of what he did, as if he knew no one wanted to know. It must be odd not to talk about the thing that dominated his waking hours. And he’d said he had a lot of waking hours.

While she wasn’t sure of his motives toward her, she was pretty sure he wanted to continue their . . . whatever their relationship was, after his business with Isaac was concluded. So if she wanted him to be a part of her life, stopping by for croissants or to share her bed, she had to be willing to understand more about that main layer.

You may save a child to ward off evil; I will cause its death . . . Did she want to know more?
l
So this is an example of what I noted earlier – we may react to things differently, but the primitive emotions that drive us all—humans as well as otherworldly beings—rarely change. So writing a paranormal being is alabout keeping the differences interesting, but pinpointing the similar needs, creating a believable mix. That’s the challenge and adventure, and what keeps us coming back to paranormals.

“What is it?” he asked.

“I’ve never been romanced, Mikhael.” She allowed herself a tight smile. She’d played plenty of sensual games, understood the lines and boundaries of them.  “But I’m certainly not romance material, and neither are you. I want to know what you think this is.”

“No male has ever romanced you?”

The truth stung a little, but she lifted her chin. “I’ve had a lot of sex, Mikhael. No relationships.”

“Well, that makes two of us.” He gave her a direct look. “No woman has ever inspired me to walk with her in the rain, or crush peanuts for her sundae. Whether or not we’re romance material—your words, not mine—why shouldn’t we be allowed, if only for a few days, what so many others have? Life is short, whether you live one year or a thousand.”

Review: Bad Girl Lessons by Seraphina Donavan

 Bad Girl Lesson
By: Seraphina Donavan

Evangeline Harper has been everyone's good girl. But after being dumped at the altar by her fiancé, Evie decides it's time to stop playing by the rules and have some fun. There's only one problem... she doesn't know how. But one of her oldest friends, Jackson Cope, is just the man to teach her. Hotter than a Georgia tent revival in July, Jackson has had a starring role in every erotic fantasy Evie has ever had. Can she convince the local bad boy to help transform her from a slightly pudgy, former debutante into a wanton, sex kitten?

Jackson's been secretly in love with Evie since they were kids, but she was always off limits to the likes of him. Now she's offering him everything he's ever wanted, but only as friends with benefits. Planning to seduce her into his life on a permanent basis, he starts out with hot, steamy lessons on how to walk on the wild side. When Evie's former fiancé shows up, trying to woo her and her trust fund back to save his sorry hide from the Dixie Mafia, it's up to Jackson to protect her from danger. But who will protect him from a broken heart?

I obtained the above information from Ms. Donavan's blog!

So with that said.... here is my review..

Okay, I have posted my warning... and to reinforce my warning, I read this book in one day... Actually, one evening. It really was that good... It was hot, it was fast, and it was a pleasurable ride! Now, with the statement of it being a short story, I kinda had to overlook the fact that it was written quickly. I don't mean the author popped this story out in fifteen minutes... No... I just mean the events take place very quickly. The story is a very good storyline and Ms Seraphina did a very good job at giving me all the details, even though it was a short story. She gave me everything I would have expected.

If you read the blurb up there.... Then you know most of the story, so what I am going to do is sell Evie and Jackson's story to you because I believe that you will be just as satisfied as me ~ The Smutty Hussy. Evie is truly a woman after my own heart... She is not your typical size zero... Nope, she is a woman built like me! She has curves, she has handles and she knows how to use them... Well, actually she didn't until Jackson showed her how much he appreciated her womanly form! She was not taught to enjoy her body, she was not taught to love herself for who/what she was.... She had a mother from hell and a fiance from the underneath of hell. So you can only imagine what living with the two of them would do to any person... So a big girl... Well, she was always conscience of her figure... But when she took an offer Jackson offered.... All bets were off!!

Now Jackson.... Hell, he could give me a bad girl lesson any day that ends in Y!!!! He is one man that flipped switches, creamed my Twinkies... and any other part of my body he would like to touch. He is just a walking wet dream! But damn the man is also very protective of what is his! And when he knows that he has a chance with Evie... Well... let's just say that a Bad Girl Lesson is not all we get!

This truly is a great story!!!!!!!!!! It is worth the read!

And remember... Always keep it Dirty, Smutty & Hussy! Photobucket

Guest Post: Wanna Bad Girl Lesson by Seraphina Donava

Ladies and gentlemen of the Lair....
I would like for you to put together a warm, hussy welcome for a new author...
Let's welcome...

Ms. Seraphina Donava

Thank you so much, Cecile, for letting me hang out at your blog today!  I’m a relatively new author, so it’s great to have opportunities like this.  Right now, I’m in a whirlwind of promotions for my new book, Bad Girl Lessons, but I’m having the time of my life with it.

As for the book, Bad Girl Lessons, it’s a fun read, bit lighter than most of my work, and at the heart of it, it’s just a good old fashioned love story.  One of the things that stands out for me about this book, and about my others, is that I write stories about “real-size” heroines.  Also, because for most of us, when we read a romance we want to identify with the heroine, I’ve been careful to describe her only as curvy, because that can mean a lot of things to a lot of people.  I want women, whether they are a size 10, a size 20, or a size 26 to be able to read these books and connect with the heroine.

Being a plus size woman myself, I was always so excited to find a mention in a book of a heroine being plump, or curvy or voluptuous, or any other descriptor that didn’t talk about how slender she was and how tiny her waist was.  We read these books because we want to believe in fairy tales, and in my fairy tales, you don’t have to be skinny to nab the hunk!  I wrote Evie with all the insecurities that slam the rest of us, and I wrote secondary characters in the book who mean well but who harp about her weight, as well.  I wanted this to be a fairly accurate portrayal of what it’s like to be an overweight woman in our society.  Sadly, whether you are too plump or too thin, weight is one of those areas where people, especially family members, feel that it is okay to comment and say whatever hurtful things they want to, because they are saying it with your best interests at heart.  I also wrote a hero, Jackson Cope,  into this book for whom Evie’s weight is simply not an issue.  Unlike some books that feature curvy heroines, the hero does not have a fetish for larger girls, he’s not a chubby chaser.  He loves Evie for who she is and how she looks is simply part of that for him.  Her curves are appealing to him because they are part of what make her who she is.

Now, that being said, this book is not a lesson in political correctness in dealing with size challenged individuals.  This book is hot, steamy, sometimes funny, and at times, I hope it will have you hanging onto the edge of your seat.   I let my “Southern” out in this book, too!  I hope people who read it can have even a fraction of the enjoyment I had in writing it!

Thanks again for having me!

To give you a taste of what you are in for...
