Review: Aztec Gold by Caridad Pinero

Six months ago, Cynthia Guerrera's lover and fellow archaeologist Rafael Santiago trekked into the Mexican jungle in search of one of the fabled Cities of Gold—and never emerged. Guilty over their parting, Cynthia won't rest until she knows what happened. When the discovery of a conquistador's journal corroborates Rafe's intended path, Cynthia is determined to finally leave the safety of the museum to rescue him, despite the conquistador's dire warnings, and her own traumatic past.

Arriving at a remote village deep in the jungle, Cynthia is both elated and angered to find Rafe alive. But he is far from well, having watched his team be decimated by a bloodthirsty demon-goddess. When Rafe reveals he has been gifted with supernatural powers—powers he plans to use to kill the beast and save his brother, still held captive in the temple—Cynthia must face her own inner demons to fight alongside the man she loves.

I obtained the above information from Amazon.com.

For those of you that know me... and those that don't this is my little statement about short books.... I do not judge short stories on the rush of their relationships, because they are just that - short stories. So, yes the relationships always could have been drawn out more, yea it seems like they fall in love to fast and of course the story could have been made longer... but it is a short story. So with that said.... here is my review.

I have to say that Ms Caridad did a great job with this story. Within the pages of this book, she brought me to the jungle so thick and dense, I could feel the humid atmosphere surround me. I could smell the earth beneath. I could feel the sweat dripping down my face and into my clothes. She brought the jungle alive and the characters to life.

This truly is an amazing story of how love stands the test of time. Cynthia and Rafe were a couple... but a safe couple. Or as far as Cynthia was concerned. She has lost her parents in the jungle, on an expedition. She was not about to risk losing her only love to another jungle.

Cynthia liked her life safe, secured and everything in her control. She loved her job, knew the risk that were involved in the field work, but was happy to take the jobs behind the desk. I think if she could have bubble wrapped herself, she would have. She just wanted safety. But Rafe offered her the passion that lived within her - deep within her. She just wanted what every woman wants... to be important to her man.

Rafe was her complete opposite. He lived for the next exploration, the next natural high of the "find", and the consumption of what was next. But what he didn't realize until it was almost to late, was that Cynthia was his anchor. He lived for the thrill, but knew that Cynthia was just living. Until one great find... almost took him away from her for good.

This is a wonderful paranormal story... Very intriguing, kept me on the edge of my seat and ready for more. I would not lead you wrong... this book is hot! Ms. Caridad's tale of what a demon demi-goddess can do to one village will make you happy to be safe and warm in your bed while reading... Now are you with me to go treasure hunting to for the great Aztec Gold?
