Review: Garret by Linda Leal Miller

McKettricks of Texas: Garrett
HQN Books
June 2010
ISBN: 978-0373774418

Fast track up the political ladder, fast cars, fast women—that’s Garrett McKettrick. Make that was. A scandal has brought him home to Blue River, a place where a man can slow down, take stock and plan his next move. Which doesn’t include staying at the family ranch with his brothers. A city boy for a long time now, Garrett doesn’t think he has the land in his blood anymore. But Blue River has other attractions, like his former high school nemesis, Julie Remington.

Now a striking woman and much-respected teacher, Julie comes complete with a precocious four-year-old cowboy, a three-legged beagle and deep ties to the community. Good thing they have nothing in common—except their undeniable attraction and a future brighter than the Texas sun.

The thoughts and words are my own.

This is book two of the McKettrick series. I have to hand it to Ms. Miller, I did not read book one... (I know shocker for those of you that know me and my OCD habits), but I never - for one minute felt lost in this book. Ms. Miller made sure that I always knew what was going on with the other brothers and sisters in the book. This is one very close knit family and it shows in the book. But however close, they all still have their own bridges to burn.

Garrett is a politician man, grooming to take over the Senator seat. He has been planning for this his whole life. But in his blood Silver Spur ranch runs deep. Allowing him to never forget that he is a McKettrick ~ through and through. And the family that rides together... stays together... Garrett sees what his brother, Tate, has ~ a future wife, kids and love. When he sees Julie sitting in his house and the big blue eyes of Calvin, her son... something shifts in Garrett.

Julie is an English teacher, drama/musical director at a high school. She is teaching in the same high school she attended when she was young. Living in the same community her and her two sisters grew up in. Julie is raising her six year old son, Calvin, all alone. Calvin's father, Gordon, had decided that he wanted no part of the raising of a child or of having the happily ever after with Julie. So, they went their separate ways. Julie had a lot on her plate... her oldest sister getting married to the love of her life, the school's funding being to low for her to do her plays that she put on and her home (the one she had rented all of Calvin's life) was being fumigated; so her loving sister, Libby and Tate told her that she could stay at the main house on Silver Spur ranch.... Garrett's house. Seeing him with Calvin was enough to send her hormones into overdrive... Like she needed something else on her plate... Or... Did Garrett want her on his plate??

This couple knows how to heat up the scenes and make you go awww all at the same time. This really is a cute book. The characters stay close to each other... helping out whenever needed. M.s Linda really gives us the sense of Family Matters. If you read this book and do not know walk away feeling a renewed sense of family ~ then something is wrong. This truly is a great romance novel. It had a bit of everything. It had an actual storyline (one that will keep you guessing at who done it), family (all three brothers), all around suspense, sweet love, hot loving, and mix in some bad people who might not be so bad after all and some that are truly bad. Ms Miller's voice is very refreshing and she made me want my own Cowboy!

Great romance novel!

  2. I have been searching for a good cowboy romance but haven't been able to figure out where to start...there's a lot of choices but I don't want to jump into the middle of a series. Great review, I think I'll start with this!

  3. Do you know how long ago it was that i read a novel by Linda Lael Miller? Erm.....digging in memory...digging some more...I know for sure it was in my teenage years but that almost two decades ago <- gawd I sound old LOL

It seems like she still knows how to deliver great romance. And I agree Cecile, I want a cowboy all on my own but currently taken by a new vampire love. I don't think Lucian Roman shares well *grin*
